Welcome to Berni Marfleet Sculptures
Welcome!....please feel free to have a look at the sculptures that I create.
They are mainly constructed from scrap metal collected from scrapyards, garages, farms and bike shops; friends drop stuff at my workshop door, so my garden gets quite busy with scrap metal, ready to be welded into surreal creatures or more abstract creations; many of them are designed to sway in the breeze outside; others are more suited to indoors
The sculptures reflect the life around this area of North Norfolk; the countryside and farming, the sea and beaches and the industry and economic activity here such as fishing, agriculture and forestry, railways, automative services and offshore gas production.
The work also is inspired by the deep and ancient history of the area from the Industrial and Agricultural Revolutions to the Reformation and medieval events such as the Peasants Revolt and the Great Fire.
I am fascinated by insects and birds and how they move; that interest is reflected in many of my more unworldly creatures which use discarded tools and other commonly used and familiar items, hopefully changing their perception in the eyes of the viewer!
My work is influenced in particular by sculptors such as David Smith, Bernard Lugenbuhl, Julio Gonzales, Anthony Caro and Jean Tinguely especially their use of steel and found metal objects.
Recycling at its most creative!
